Let’s be honest, kids do the cutest things… until those habits start affecting their teeth. Whether it’s thumb sucking, nail biting, or chewing on pencils, some everyday behaviors can quietly harm your child’s developing smile. And while these habits may seem harmless at first, they can lead to long-term dental issues if not addressed early.
At Tiny Teeth, we believe that prevention is always better than a cure. As parents, knowing what to watch out for and when to act can make all the difference. So, let’s explore some common oral habits in kids that could be damaging those pearly whites, and how we offer habit-breaking appliances for kids in Kurla to help fix the problem gently and effectively.
1. Thumb Sucking – The Classic Culprit
Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for babies and toddlers. It helps them feel secure and calm. But if this habit continues beyond the age of 4 or 5, it can affect how their teeth and jaw grow.
What can happen:
- Forward positioning of the upper teeth
- Improper bite (open bite or crossbite)
- Speech difficulties in some cases
How we help at Tiny Teeth:
We don’t believe in scolding or stressing your child. Instead, we offer habit-breaking appliances for kids in Kurla that are gentle, comfortable, and custom-made. These devices act as a reminder and help your child slowly stop the habit on their own.
2. Tongue Thrusting – The Silent Shifter
You may not notice this one easily, but tongue thrusting (pushing the tongue against the front teeth while swallowing) is more common than you think. Over time, it can cause gaps between teeth and even affect speech.
What can happen:
- Misaligned teeth
- Bite problems
- Lisp or other speech issues
Treatment:
We work closely with parents and speech therapists (if needed) to create a treatment plan. Our habit-breaking appliances gently guide the tongue into the correct position, encouraging better muscle coordination.
3. Mouth Breathing – More Than Just a Habit
Breathing through the mouth instead of the nose might seem harmless, especially when a child has a cold. But if it becomes a long-term habit, it can affect facial growth and oral health.
What can happen:
- Narrow jaw and crowded teeth
- Dry mouth, leading to cavities
- Tiredness and lack of focus during the day
What we do at Tiny Teeth:
We first identify the root cause, whether it's nasal blockage, allergies, or habit. Then, we offer habit correction appliances or refer to ENT specialists if required. Our goal is always to support holistic health for your child.
4. Lip Biting or Lip Sucking
This one often goes unnoticed. Some kids have a habit of biting or sucking their lower lip, especially when they’re nervous or bored.
What can happen:
- Misalignment of teeth
- Chapped, irritated lips
- Increased risk of developing an overbite
Solution:
We offer behavior guidance along with simple habit-breaking devices that keep the teeth and lips in the right position. These are easy to wear and don’t interfere with school or playtime.
5. Prolonged Pacifier Use
Pacifiers are great for babies, but using them beyond the toddler years can be just as harmful as thumb sucking.
What can happen:
- Similar dental changes as thumb sucking
- Difficulty in speech development
- Delay in permanent teeth eruption
